(4) Pat Roberts ( Avonmouth , Labour)

Personally ,I don't disagree with you ,but for a different reason.We may be able to demand fully accessible taxis ,but we cannot require the driver to be trained to handle disabled passengers.
When I was temporarily in a wheelchair ,I had the most horrific experience with a wheelchair accessible vehicle.The driver had no idea of how to get the chair up the ramp ,and let go of me . i rolled backwards ,and if there had not been someone there who caught me,I would have been tipped out.After that ,I only used saloons ,because being able to transfer ,I could get myself in and out ,without "help".
I have said this again and again ,but my colleagues are determined to pursue what is an agreed policy,and I don't think I can change their minds.In addition ,after 20 years as a social worker with elderly and disabled people ,I have never had a problem getting my clients in and out of my Nissan Micra.
Its not the vehicle ,but the skill of the driver ,which is important.

Dear Mr Maddock,

Firstly, please accept my apologies for not replying sooner - I have been on leave until last night. Unfortunately, I was not successful in being re-elected on 7th June and therefore no longer a councillor. The Liberal Democrat group on Bristol City Council had hoped to increase their number at this ballot in order to prevent some of the ill thought out schemes of the Labour run Council. However, I will continue to work to this end and will be supporting my colleagues in their endevours to right the wrongs perpetrated by the Labour Group.

I thank you therefore for highlighting this unfair piece of legislation, which is proof yet again that very little consultation or investigation is undertaken at a local level - something that has been our 'battle cry' for the people of Bristol for many years. I can assure you that I will give my support to the efforts that my Liberal Democrat colleagues will surely give to the problem that taxi drivers face. Surely, the Council's decision to hasten the implementation of the DDA can and should be challenged.
