I find your site very
interesting. I am a taxi driver in Melbourne,
Australia and things are run much differently over here. Up until the
end of
last year I drove for Euro taxis in South Glos. So I understand the problems
you have.
Over here you cannot get a new license
for a vehicle. The state government
in the sixties released the last batch, which they had to give away
because
nobody wanted them; they now go for $300,000 each. Most drivers don't
own
their own taxis, they drive through depots. My depot has around 85 cars
and
the company we represent has around 1,000 cars under their arm, although
they don't own the cars they just give them the work. All in all in
Melbourne there are around 4,500 taxis servicing a population of around
3
million people. All companies have computer dispatch systems so we don't
have to deal with a radio controller, which I like so I don't have to
account for my time constantly. If you have ever worked for Juan Sanzo,
you'll know what I mean. Another feature over here is that we have Epos
terminals in all of our cars so we can take credit and debit card payments
instead of trying to find cash point.
All new drivers over here have to do
a one-week training course before they
can get their license. It doesn't stop poor drivers getting their license
but it makes the government look good.
I hope you have found this informative.
Yours Sincerely
Terry Bailey
