Deric Gratton mentioned to me the other day that Richard Gardener had some old pictures of cabs from the past I would love to use them, if Richard agrees. There have been some great characters in the trade in the thirty years that I have been a driver and I'm sure plenty before that. There must be pictures and stories of these people so please dig them out.
I remember people like Bill Westaway ( big chief shirt hang out ) who was quite a force in the taxi organisations of the time. When Bill addressed a meeting if you closed your eyes, you would swear you were listening to Churchill. A knowledgeable, big man.
Many other names come to mind like Jack Jones (father of Pat
and Pete), Stan Peters ( father of Terry ), Vick Gannaway ( father of Steve
), Johnny Oaten ( father of Gerald, no longer in the trade), George Monks (father
of Steve, no longer in the trade), Gert from Streamline, Ollie Petherbridge,
Ralph (Lofty) Hibbard, Archie the fox, the lid, and many, many more.
If you have any photographs of these or any other cab people I would love to
put them on the page.
